I, Gertrude McCluck, had just finished the last smackerel of my cracked corn patty when Babs screeched, "Ooooooh! Let's go on the octa-chicken!!!"
"You guys go ahead, I don't really like that ride." I scratched my way over to the merry-go-round. "I prefer safe rides," I thought to myself.
After the merry-go-round ride, I headed on over to the Livestock Barn. "I think I'll go look at the eggs for this year's contest," I mused. When I arrived at the table kept for holding all the entrees, I saw another hen standing near the eggs. "Hello," I greeted the Blue-Silkie Bantam.
"Look at these Gi-normous eggs I laid!" she clucked, ignorant of my greeting, "Aren't they marvelous?"
"They are very nice looking," I said cautiously. There was something about the eggs that got my detective skills pecking.
"OF COURSE they're nice!!!" Barbara the Silkie sounded slightly indignant. "They took me a whole week to lay!"
Of course! The last speck of information she dropped told me all I needed to know.
Epilogue
Barbara had not indeed laid the eggs. Even though these eggs had a bluish tint like Silkie eggs, these eggs were much larger. Silkies also lay about every two or three days, so she couldn't have possibly laid the eggs within one week. After many questions, Barbara admitted that her Easter Egger friend, Mala, had given her the eggs a week before and knew nothing about what she planned to do with them. The eggs ended up being disqualified and Barbara sent Mala an apology note.
"Now that's what I call a county fair!"
