Gertrude McCluck and the
Mystery of the Haunted Farm

By Christopher Dunkley
California

"Cock-a-doodle-doo," said Duke as the sun rose over the fresh green hill at Gerny Acres farm. Just as he was greeting the new morning, Hermes came running and dirt and grass flew as he dashed over to Gertrude. He suddenly stopped and said, "I have been hearing rumors that there is a haunted farm near here." As he spoke, he shook his head to make the flies buzz away.

"Should I check it out?" asked Gertrude, looking spooked.

"Yes!!" replied Hermes.

"Then I'm on the case!" said Gertrude.

Gabby, the little chick, heard their conversation and said, "Can I come along too?" Gertrude agreed, so Gabby took a little red bucket and put on a pink dress with purple heart-shaped buttons. After a short walk, they arrived at the old, creepy, twisted farm. Gabby peeked in the barn door, and it creaked as it opened. She carefully went in, and all of a sudden something came flying at Gabby and she heard a clucking noise. She quickly ran out of the barn.

Next Gertrude McCluck went in. She had her magnifying glass with her and looked through it to see what was causing the strange noise. As the sun came through the open door, she saw something white float by. It was about the same size as Gertrude and she saw that it was a chicken! She bravely continued walking, and as she walked farther she noticed other animals - cows, sheep, pigs, goats, chickens and horses. She asked them why they were in the barn, and they said they did not know.

Gertrude found a book on the shelf and it said "Farmer's Diary" on the front. She started reading it with her magnifying glass. It said:

October 31, 2001: We got a new farm. We bought it because it was cheap, but I recently discovered that things are different here. Since we moved here, all our animals are getting paler and paler, and I don't know why. Then I realized that the homemade food I bought from the neighbor's was made with a secret ingredient. That secret ingredient is making my animals disappear! My wife and I are packing up and leaving!

Gertrude put the diary down and saw that the animals were eating the food. She told them to stop right away. She went back to Gerny farms and brought back some of their food and told them to try it. Almost immediately their color started to come back and they returned to normal. The animals cheered and thanked Gertrude.

A few weeks later, a new family moved into town and bought the farm with all the animals in it. They repaired the old barn and named it "The Farm of Fun." As they cleaned out the barn, they found the diary and discovered what Gertrude McCluck had found out. Immediately they threw away all the old food. The animals grew strong and were happy again and Gertrude and Gabby returned to Gerny Farms, having solved another mystery.
