The Case of The Missing Chick

By Emily Neville
North Carolina

"Gertrude, wake up, Gertrude," clucked Ima Chick. Now wide awake and alert, Gertrude McCluck looked about. She saw Sir Pecks - A - Lot and his son, Lancelot. Then there was Afro the Polish chicken and a worried looking Ima Chick. "Ima, what is all of this clucking about?" Gertrude knew when a mystery was coming and this already seemed like a chance to solve a case. Ima Chick looked terribly upset and she began to tell her story and as the tale wore on, Gertrude was astonished. Apparently, Ima's chicks were missing. It was up to detective Gertrude McCluck to solve the case.

Gertrude decided to sneak out of the coop when the farmer came in to feed all of the chickens. As soon as the farmer opened the door, Gertrude was right beside it. When the farmer leaned down to pour the feed, Gertrude flew out the door. Amazingly, Farmer John did not notice! Gertrude walked around the whole barn looking for the chicks. Though she looked and listened harder than ever before, she could not find them. She went to the pond to get a drink of water before heading back to the coop. "How could the chicks just disappear," she thought to herself. The detective could not believe that Ima would never see her chicks again.

Just then Gertrude heard the peeping of chicks. She looked up and around the pond. Hmmm - no chicks were in sight. The peeping of chicks came again and Gertrude realized the noise was coming from above her. She stood up now looking into the trees. "Wait, what is that?" she clucked aloud. Gertrude could not believe her eyes when she saw the three chicks sitting in a nest up high in the trees. The chicks must have been mistaken for someone else's offspring she decided. Well now Gertrude had found the chicks, but how was she supposed to get them down from the tree? Troubled, she gave a low cluck and sat down.

Up above Mrs. Ex-Ray Hawk was enjoying herself on a late afternoon flight when she spotted Gertrude McCluck. She noticed how unhappy the poor chicken looked and flew down.

Gertrude explained her dilemma to Mrs. Ex-Ray. The kind hearted hawk was happy to help by flying the chicks down from the tree. Then she flew back in to the sky leaving a beaming Gertrude. The chicks were tired and scared, but so happy to see a familiar face. Gertrude safely led them back to their worried mother inside the coop and feeling satisfied, sat to ponder the day's events. "Now to find that mixed-up bird..." the ingenious detective clucked.
