Gertrude McCluck and
the Case of the Missing Egg

By Ethan Denson
Tennessee

Hello y'all, I'm Gertrude McCluck. (Of course you probably know!)

Now Farmer Ethan Denson won the lottery, and a free trip to Africa! He didn't have anyone to take care of us animals, so he just took us with him! My ears hurt from listening to the guide talk, when all of a sudden we heard, "Help, help, oh, SOS!" we all ran. It was Maybelle the White Leghorn. She is very lazy and has a taste for excitement.

"Oh, help me, oh, an egg-eater snake has just eaten my egg, oh!" she cried.

I grabbed my trusty spyglass, and began looking for clues. She had a nice nest in the sand shaded by a small bush. I had also noticed her spying on the guide earlier that day.

"It's alright," I said, "Maybelle just wants some excitement."

"How do you know?", asked Turk the Naked Neck.

"Well," I said, "I have some clues: 1. If there had been a snake, it would've left tracks in the sand. 2. After an egg-eater snake eats the egg, it spits the shell back out. 3. I had noticed her spying on the guide earlier, if she had been in sight, we might be suspicious."

Maybelle blushed and pulled her eggs out from the bush.
