Gertrude McCluck arrived at Tom Thumb and HunkaMunca's. She was about to knock on the door, when a water balloon fell just behind her. She looked up and saw a small plane circling over her head. She jumped in the door and looked out the window at the plane, pulling out her binoculars as she did so. All she could read on the side was "NB1." Suddenly a firecracker landed right in front of the window setting off a large plume of smoke. When the smoke cleared, the plane was gone.
Tomthumb came hurrying into the room. "Hello, Gertrude, I'm so glad came. Did you hear that BANG?"
"Yes," said Gertrude, "Someone was also dropping water balloons. I had to duck inside quickly. I saw a plane."
Just then, they heard a buzzing noise and a splat in the chimney. Water began dripping down the sides of the fireplace. Gertrude said, "Like as not that's him again." She looked out the window and saw a lighted smoke bomb hurtle down and land in the shrubs underneath the window.
Tom Thumb asked, "Did you get the plane's reg. number?"
"Yes," she said. " NB1."
"That sounds like Naughty Beaver's old plane, but it hasn't been flyable since Finder got into the hanger with a hammer. Silly little Cochin thought she was the greatest aircraft mechanic."
Just then Finder walked in. "Hello, Mrs. McCluck. Did I hear you talking about how I fixed Naughty Beaver's plane?
Naughty Beaver walked in on that and said, "Yeah, yeah and now the engine won't even start after all your tinkering. But I'm going off and fly my new plane for a few minutes. And don't tinker with this one, Finder!" he added as a parting shot before he ducked back out the door.
HuncaMunca watched him through the window. "He's headed for the old hanger. I didn't know he had his plane in there."
A minute later, he pulled his plane out. As he took off, Gertrude saw that it read NB1.
Turning to HuncaMunca, Gertrude said, "I didn't hear you come in. I'm glad to see you. What was it you wrote me about?"
"Well, every time we go to build a fire in the fireplace a water balloon drops down the chimney, or when we go to get potatoes, the bag is filled with firewood. It's hardly ever the same type of trouble," answered HuncaMunca.
"Hmmm, I'm going out to the hangar and see where Naughty Beaver's old plane is," said Gertrude.
In the hangar sat a shining new plane and a pile of parts that had obviously been knocked out by Finder. There were no other planes in the hangar. Gertrude called Tomthumb. "I think we need to have a nice little reception party for Naughty Beaver."
An hour later Naughty Beaver was sitting unhappily in the hall while his pockets were being emptied and his plane was searched. They ended up with an impressive assortment of water balloons, fireworks, and potatoes.
"I should have known!" said HuncaMunca.
