The Case of the
Displaced Rooster

By Makailee Rodgers
Kentucky

Honorable Mention

One day while visiting the Chester's farm, Gertrude McCluck walked into a chicken meeting. The meeting was to find out why Lightning, a young white rooster, had to be sold. He said it was because nobody loved him. But Buddy, his father, said he believed it was because there couldn't be two roosters in the hen house. Buddy said he was the man in the coop for the ladies.

Gertrude asked how many chickens were in the coop.

Buddy replied, "Ten hens and two roosters."

Gertrude said, "I'm going to look around the place. I'll be back."

Well, there was one chicken that did not join the meeting. Her name was Mrs. Chubby. Mrs. Chubby was at her famous restaurant, the "Compost Pile," eating dinner.

Gertrude walked up and said, "Excuse me, can we talk?"

"No," said Mrs. Chubby, "I'm eating."

Henrietta walked up and said, "Mind your manners Mrs. Chubby, this is our guest."

Mrs. Chubby said, "I don't care. I'm hungry."

"You're always hungry. That's why your name is Mrs. Chubby."

"Humph," said Mrs. Chubby as she went back to eating.

"Ignore her," said Henrietta, "She is such a hog. What do you think about the meeting?"

"I do not think it is fair," said Gertrude. "He needs a home too. It's where his family is."

All the sudden they heard, "I can help, I can help!"

"That's Tom, the Bourbon Red turkey," Henrietta said. "Let's go see him." So Henrietta and Gertrude went to see what Tom had to say.

"Lightning can move in with us. We have enough room in our pen and he was in the incubator with me, so why not let him live with me?" said Tom.

Gertrude said, "You're such a kind bird, I'll go tell Lightning." So Gertrude and Henrietta went and told Lightning and the others. There was much to cluck about. All the chickens went to the "Compost Pile" to have a celebration feast and Gertrude McCluck went back to Gerny Acres to molt.

The end
