Hello, I'm Gertrude McCluck, Chicken in Charge. I'm on my way to the pond to see what's going on. Babs is down there with some of the ducks that come here. She's been down by the pond a lot lately.
"Hello, Babs," I said, walking through the marshy grass down to the pond.
"Oh, hi Gertrude! Did you come to help find the eggs?"
"Eggs? Shouldn't they be left in the coop?" I asked, confused.
"No, these eggs someone left floating in the pond a few days ago. I was watching them to see what kind of bird they would hatch into. They must be tiny, since the eggs were so small. I can't find them now," she said, looking off into the water.
"Babs, were these eggs small and clear, with a small black center?" I asked.
"Yes! How do you know? Did you see them?"
"Not those same eggs, but I've seen ones just like them before."
Babs had been looking after a clutch of frog eggs. When I showed her some tadpoles swimming around in a clump of weeds, she was pleased to know what became of the eggs she was watching. Soon we'll hear little frogs singing in the pond at night!
