Hello, I'm Gertrude McCluck. I live at Green Acres in Kansas. I am queen of the coop!
I'm sitting on my soft nesting box when out of the corner of my eye I see bags upon bags of scratch. (My favorite food.) I run over as fast as I can without anyone noticing. I eat until I can't eat any more. After that I got very sleepy, so I decided to sleep in the soft warm bag.
I slept for awhile, but when I awoke I felt something rumble under me! I saw the landscape around me moving quickly. I'm awake now and I peek through a little hole in front of me. I see the back of a truck going pretty fast. I panic, but I know there is nothing I could do about this. I fall back to sleep by the gentle rock of the truck.
I wake a little while later and think I'm in a dream. I see the sparkling ocean. I blink a couple of times to make sure it's real, and sure enough, it is. Sparkly and crystal clear.
Some men get out of the truck. They grab the bags and walk to a large dock. At the end of the dock is a colossal ship painted blue and white. They load the bags onto it. The ship starts up and we take off. I am really panicked now, and I want to scream. So instead I eat and fall asleep again.
We get there two days later. I'm sick of being in this bag. I need to stretch my legs. The ship finally stops. They load the bags onto a pallet in front of a huge barge. I jump out of the bag when I think the coast is clear. The men see me; one yells to the other man, "Get that chicken. Where did she come from?" The men catch me by the legs and hold me upside down. They walk quickly to an enormous tin barn, opening the door just enough to fling me in and shut it behind me. In midair I see a great flurry of white feathers. I hit the ground with a hard thud. I landed on another hen. She was mad but quickly got over it. She turned to look at me; she had large brown eyes and a pointy beak.
"Hello, who are you?" I said.
"My name is Lola. Who are you?"
"My name is Gertrude McCluck."
"Nice to meet you, Gertrude."
I asked Lola, "Could you help me get back home to Kansas. Where are we anyway?"
Lola said, "We are in Argentina, South America." Lola told me she didn't like it much here. Argentina was hot and they didn't feed her much. I panicked and realized I was hungry.
I saw the bags of grain the men had left. I worked my way through a bag, and began to eat and eat and eat. I then fell asleep. When I woke up, I saw the ocean below me. I was on a ship again. I was sad I didn't get to say adios to Lola! Suddenly I heard a cluck, cluck, cluck. I jumped out of my bag and ripped open the bag with the noise. It was Lola! The trip went by quickly with Lola onboard.
I made it home where everyone was happy to see me and excited to meet Lola. Lola was happy to finally put her feet in real grass. I was happy to end my adventure and begin a new friendship!
I look forward to my next adventure as Gertrude McCluck, the roaming hen!
