What Happened When
Gertrude McCluck Went to Africa

By Wilson McGuinn
New York

Nothing was happening in the barnyard today so I thought I'd take a quick trip to Africa. So, I went down to the airport and got on a plane, and before you could say "Kentucky Fried Chicken," we were off!

When our plane touched down and I got off, I ran straight into a pride of confused lions. I could tell they had a problem, so I asked them what was wrong. They told me that someone had stolen the kill they had just made. Then they told me that it could only have been the vultures or hyenas, because they were the only other groups of predators around at the time. Then they asked me if I could help them, and I told them I would do my best.

I started to think, and then something clicked in my head. I realized that it could have only been the hyenas, because vultures are scavengers, they don't steal.

Hyenas scavenge too, but they will steal a kill if they get the chance. I told the lions what I thought, and they decided to go out and find the hyenas.

Well, when the hyenas saw the lions coming, a fight started. I didn't know what to do. I decided to rally up all the animals I could find. When I had gotten them all, we went back to the fight and started saying, "Make peace, not war!" Then the lions and hyenas realized that fighting over food was pointless, so they made peace and decided to share.

My work done, I traveled back home. I soon had a new case.
