Gertrude McCluck's Adventure!

By Bailey Thumm
Pennsylvania

HI! I'm Gertrude McCluck! Today I am going to this place called Bailey's Chicken Farm! They have Buff Orpingtons there, just like me! This place is awesome! There are chickens all around. I am going to go introduce myself.

"Hello! My name is Gertrude McCluck."

The captain of the flock introduced herself. "Hi! My name is Susie Meadows!"

There are 2 other types of chickens here — a Black Australorp and a white chicken from Bailey's school when her 3rd Grade classmates hatched chicks! I asked what they were doing before I got here. The captain said, "Finding bugs in the yard!"

Then came a red, bush-tailed, brown-eyed...FOXXXX!!! The captain squawked, "Run for your lives!" But a hero came to the rescue! Gus — the wonder chicken safety dog! He ran the fox off and it didn't get any of us!

We chirped and said, "Ha, ha, haaaa, you didn't catch us!!!" Now it is about 4:15 p.m. and we're still eating bugs in the grass. Bailey came out and called us to the porch. She had a bag in her hand. The captain said, "Get her! She has chips!"

After that we went to bed. The captain said to me, "She gives us a treat every night."

I asked, "Is there any other feeding schedule I need to know about?"

"Yes," replied the captain, "Bailey gives us scratch every morning! Also, for breakfast she gives us cookies and grapes!"

They invited me to stay overnight, so I politely accepted. Before going to school, Bailey came down to let us out into the yard. We got up and said "Good Morning!" to each other. Then Bailey gave us our scratch and biscuits! We went outside and ate bugs! Then we got in trouble for digging in Bailey's garden and eating her plants.

The captain said, "It's time for our morning exercise." We did jumping jacks, pushups, and sit-ups! Then we ate bugs again.

Bailey came home from school and said we could go for a swim in the pool. So we put on our bathing suits and goggles. We played beach ball, Marco Polo, chicken water tag, chicken jumps, noodle tag, and had chicken races! Bailey came out to make sure we were ok. But when she saw the mess in the pool with the toys, she flipped! Luckily, Bailey is so nice she didn't even yell at us!

Next, the captain suggested we make s'mores but I didn't like that idea — all those feathers, yikes! We still did it, but no one got hurt! Plus they were super, yummy, and delicious. Afterwards, we all sat on a humongous stone and read this magazine called Backyard Poultry!

See you next time when I tell you another great adventure of mine! One day I am sure you will have a great adventure just like I did with my new friends at Bailey's Chicken Farm!
