Gertrude McCluck was very glum. She wanted adventure. So she fluffed up her feathers, laid her egg for the day and set off going north.
Then she looked up at the sun and the clouds. She realized she wasn't going north. When she was about to turn around she heard little tweets. She turned and there stood three little baby chicks. They were very scared.
Gertrude got talking to them and she figured out they weren't babies at all. They were young bantam chicks. One of the smallest chickens ever! They kept talking and the bantams said their mother was chased away by a fox. They also said they hadn't seen her since then and they were very worried about her.
Gertrude asked the bantams what their mother's name was. They said, "Mama Sylvia."
Gertrude asked what their mother looked like.
The smallest bantam said, "She looks like me because I'm all gray and our mother is too".
Gertrude asked, "How long ago did this happen?"
The bantams said, "Three days ago".
Gertrude said, "Farmer Huff found a chicken lost in the wilderness three days ago! She looked like you!"
"It might be our mother!" said one.
"It has to be our mother!" said the next.
"It is our mother!" said another.
While the bantams were discussing this Gertrude thought, "I can't just leave the bantam chicks here or the fox might come and kill them while I'm going on an adventure and the bantams' mother would be so sad."
The bantams started cheeping up again and they said, "Gertrude please take us to our mother, we miss her!"
Gertrude said, "Ok, I will. Stay close to me and try to be quiet so we don't attract the fox."
They walked for a long time but they finally reached the chicken coop. They looked for the bantams' mother. They looked for the bantams' mother outside but she wasn't there. They went inside the coop. The chicks saw her. They cheeped, "Mama, mama, we missed you!" The chicks ran to their mama and went under her wings.
Gertrude looked at Sylvia. Mama Sylvia looked at Gertrude. Sylvia asked, "Are you the one who found my babies?"
Gertrude said, "Yes, I did."
Sylvia said, "Thank you so much!"
Gertrude said, "Your welcome." Gertrude thought of something. She asked Mama Sylvia, "What are the chick's names'?"
Mama Sylvia said, "Sam, Sally, and Frilly."
Then Gertrude told Mama Sylvia the whole story. Mama Sylvia asked Gertrude if she wanted to go back on an adventure.
Gertrude said, "No, thank you! I'm going to stay right here with you and we're going to have so much fun!" Then she asked if they wanted to go eat some corn with her.
The chicks and their mom said thanks for inviting them. Then they all went to the corn and started eating. They were very hungry, especially the chicks.
Gertrude thought to herself, "That was enough adventure for one day!"
