The Story of Gertrude McCluck and Her Chicks

By Jessica Cosgrove
North Carolina

One day I, Gertrude McCluck, decided I would lay 10 eggs under a bush and begin to set. After 21 days of setting one egg started cracking, then another, all the eggs were cracking and all 10 of the chicks came out. My chicks stood in our nest for two days. Then I took them out for a walk. My chicks were very happy.

After a day of play I called them together and told them, "tomorrow we are going to the farmers market but right now it is time to go to our nest and go to sleep." The next morning we all went out to the farmers marker to get a jar of worms and a can of bugs, but on the way one of my chicks fell in a mud puddle.

I tried and tried to get him out but I could not, just then my best friend, Susie McChicken, came by. "Can you please help me get my chick out of the mud?"

"Oh yes," said Susie McChicken. She got a stick, we pushed the stick into the mud and the chick climbed onto the stick and out he came. After we got our things at the farmers market it started to rain.

"Oh no," I said as it started to rain harder. We all ran home as quickly as we could. There was lightning and thunder, but we made it home safely.

Under the bush it was warm and cozy all the chicks went under my wings and we all went to sleep happily
