It was a rainy day, so I called the rest of the chickens to the coop to think of something to do. I also called the ducks and geese inside.
One of the geese, Honkie, suggested that we go out and play in a puddle of water. Not one of the chickens wanted to do that. Another chicken suggested having a laying contest. Then I had a bright idea. Maybe we could have a poultry facts quiz.
"That would be fun," said Maria, a White Orpington.
"All right, Berry will go first," I said, "What chicken breed is the best setter?"
"The Silkie," Berry answered. She was a Blue-laced Red Wyandotte.
"Now...what chicken breed is the smallest, SiSi Sebright?" I asked.
"Isn't it the Serama?" she clucked.
"Yes," I said to SiSi. I turned to Poppy, a Cuckoo Marans pullet. "What chicken breed can be as tall as 90 cm, Poppy?"
"The Sebright!" Poppy replied. I heard lots of honking, cackling and quacking.
"That was a cuckoo answer, Poppy," said Deedee, a Welsh Harlequin duck.
"It is the Malay, Poppy. But never mind," I said, to cheer her up. At this point, Pekie, an India Blue peahen, came in.
"Hello, Pekie. We were having a poultry facts quiz," said Granny Goose, a Pilgrim goose.
"Are you still having one?" asked Pekie.
"Yes, Pekie. Please join us," I said. "Deedee Duck, which duck breed lays the most eggs?"
"Is it the Khaki Campbell?" she quacked.
"Yes, it is. Now, Lady Orpington, name a chicken with 5 toes." I said.
"The Dorking," she said.
Then my sister Gail asked for a question, so I asked her to name the commercial white egg layer.
"The Leghorn, right, Gertrude?" Gail asked.
"Yes, that's right," I said.
Suddenly, Polly, a Polish hen, jumped up, "I need to lay an egg, Gertrude. Bye, ladies," she said.
After she left, I turned to Molly the goose, " Which goose breed lays the most eggs?"
"The Chinese. They lay smaller eggs but more eggs. Am I right, Gertrude?" honked Molly.
"Correct. Well, I think it stopped raining. How did you like it, Deedee?" I said.
"It was eggs-citing!" Deedee quacked.
"Well, that showed we aren't bird-brains," I clucked as I went to get a wingful of grain.
