Once there were two chickens. Their names were Gertrude McCluck and Big Head. They were sisters who lived in a big brown house in the woods. They had a broken window in their kitchen because a branch had flown through it during a thunderstorm. One day, when they got back from the park, they saw that some of their eggs were stolen! Gertrude was so sad she cried for five hours. Big Head was so mad she stomped her feet until her claws were not sharp anymore. They needed to find out who stole the eggs.
Gertrude had a great idea! She knocked on the kitchen wall and out came Liz the mouse, who lived inside a hole in the wall. "What do you need me for?" asked Liz.
"Somebody stole our eggs! We need you to help us find out who did it. Can you spy on the house while we are at the park? When we get back, you can tell us who stole out eggs," said Gertrude.
"Yes, I can do that. I'll hide in my hole," Liz said.
The next day, Gertrude and Big head went to the park. While they were gone, Liz the mouse watched the house. She saw a raccoon hop through the broken window and steal the rest of the eggs. Gertrude and Big Head came back from the park.
Liz the mouse told Gertrude and Big Head about the raccoon, "I have an idea. Let's scare the raccoon away. After you lay more eggs, we can ask Rose the bear and her cub Rosie to growl at the raccoon."
"Sounds like a good idea," said Big Head.
After breakfast, Gertrude went to Rose and Rosie's cave in the woods. She asked Rose and Rosie to scare away the raccoon that was stealing their eggs. Rose and Rosie said they would. Then Gertrude and Big Head got very busy laying eggs. Gertrude laid five eggs, and Big Head laid ten eggs. They left the eggs in the nest on the floor in the kitchen and quickly hid under their beds.
Rose and Rosie came over and hid behind the house waiting for the raccoon. Then, at lunchtime, the raccoon came. It hopped through the window and went straight for the kitchen. The raccoon took the nest. It was about to hop out the window when Rose and Rosie appeared on the other side. They growled so loud that the raccoon dropped the nest and ran out the front door as fast as it could. The eggs broke, but the raccoon was gone.
Gertrude, Big Head, and Liz came out of their hiding places. "Thank you so much, Rose and Rosie! I don't think the raccoon will come back," said Gertrude.
Then Gertrude got some fish out of the refrigerator and gave them to Rose and Rosie. Big Head gave Liz some delicious cheese. Gertrude and Big Head finally did not have to worry about the raccoon anymore.
