Gertrude McCluck's World Trip

By Larry Seppi
Maryland

Gertrude was going to Westminster, Maryland to see her friend, Star the Americauna. "My eggs keep disappearing and the 4-H fair is in 2 days!" she said when they met up with each other.

"Don't worry," Gertrude said, "I will find your eggs!" Gertrude asked Ruby and Bella, the two Cochins, if they saw anything last night.

"I saw something tall and skinny," said Ruby.

"It looked like an Aseel," said Bella. Then she asked the two Pekin ducks, Billy and Sprite, if there was an Aseel farm around there.

"Yes," said Billy. "About 1 mile west," said Sprite.

"Thank you!" Gertrude said.

Later that night Gertrude went to the Aseel farm. "Those Aseels are scary looking!" she thought. After searching a little while she found the eggs in a nest — but they were guarded by a sleeping rooster!

"I'll have to do it fast!" Gertrude thought. So she snatched the eggs really fast. It was midnight when Gertrude found a cozy spot in a boat. As soon as she fell asleep the boat left for Italy!

When she woke up, Gertrude found herself in a chicken barn full of Italian Leghorns. "Excuse me," Gertrude asked one of the Leghorns, "How do you get back to America?"

"You have to get on a plane to America, but it lands in Belgium. It leaves in 5 minutes," said the Leghorn.

"Do you want to come with me?" asked Gertrude.

"Sure!" the Leghorn replied.

"What's your name?" asked Gertrude.

"Gimpy, because when I walk, I have a limp," said the Leghorn, "What's your name?"

"Gertrude McCluck."

They had to hurry since the plane was about to leave, and jumped on just in time! It didn't take long to get to Belgium. It landed in a small town, but it did have a lot of Bearded Belgian d` Uccles.

"Do you know how to get America?" Gertrude asked a Mille Fleur.

"There's an airplane about to leave for America."

"What's your name?" asked Gertrude.

"Fluff," replied the Belgian.

"Do you want to come with us?" asked Gertrude.

"Sure!"

In the airplane they found some hay and made three nests to keep the eggs warm. Soon they got back to America, landing in New Jersey.

"Look at those chickens!" exclaimed Gimpy.

"Hello!" said a Black Jersey Giant, "My name is Giant."

"I'm Gertrude McCluck and this is Gimpy and Fluff."

"Do you want to come with us to help return these eggs?" asked Gimpy.

"Yes, please!" said Giant, "Can my friend Sunny, the Plymouth Rock, come?"

"Sure!" they exclaimed. Soon everyone returned to Westminster.

"Here you go," said Gertrude, "I also brought some new friends for you."

"Thank you so much!" said Star.

Later that week Gertrude heard that all of her new friends and the eggs all won Champion!
