Gertrude McCluck and
the Weekend Get-Away

By Mardee Sadowsky
Missouri

"Come on Eggtha," begged Gertrude. "You will meet new chickens and there is even another bantam there!" Gertrude exclaimed.

"Really?" questioned Eggtha.

"Yes! Come on," Gertrude said, "this will be fun!"

Gertrude McCluck and Eggtha had been invited to a neighboring cattle ranch, by the feathered friends of the Fun and Games committee. They had spent two whole days getting ready to go. Eggtha was not so sure.

"Here we are!" cackled Gertrude. Suddenly excitement took hold of Eggtha and she yelled, "I can't wait to get a nesting box. We've been walking for hours!"

They could hear some voices shouting, "They're here!" as a rolling ball of feathers was bowling straight toward them. Suddenly, it stopped right in front of them! It was a puffy golden feathered bantam hen. On top of her head was a white felt cowboy hat.

"Hi there!" I'm Cowgirl Jane! Welcome to the OGL Ranch!" said the little fiery bantam. " 'OGL' stands for Osage Grass and Livestock and you are here!"

"I hope she didn't scare you," came a sweet motherly voice, as a beautiful Buff appeared. "Welcome, and my name is Turnip."

Next was a Barred Rock saying, "And my name is Mrs. Coney."

"Hello!" said Gertrude and Eggtha.

"You guys are probably tired and we just got your nesting boxes ready for you," said Mrs. Coney," and as you can see, Jane here is quite a little jitter bug!"

"You can come to any of us if you need anything and Jane will show you around the ranch," said Turnip. Gertrude and Eggtha took a little rest, and then went for a walk about with Cowgirl Jane.

"Thanks for showing us around, Cowgirl," said Gertrude.

"No problem!" said Cowgirl Jane, "How do you like OGL so far, Eggtha?"

Eggtha replied, "It's a wonderful vacation spot. Turnip says it is good we came when we did. She said that there are extra scraps and soon we will be allowed in the garden to eat all of the left over veggies and tons of bugs."

"Oh, we will have 'Chick-a-doodle-doo night' tonight and we really want you to come!" said Cowgirl Jane excitedly. "There will be POPCORN!"

"We'll be there," said Gertrude.

"Tootles then," yelled Cowgirl Jane as she hurried off.

"You need to ruffle your feathers, Eggtha, your wet," said Gertrude, "and I'll fix mine. Oh there's the bell, let's go!"

"Gertrude! Oh, Gertrude!" yelled Cowgirl Jane, as she came running. "We have no popcorn. The girl usually brings us some when she chores. Whatever will we do?" she said sadly.

"Show me your corn supplies," said Gertrude. Gertrude McCluck looked in the bin and there was nothing but the ground fines of corn. Rattle- Rattle- buzz-ding went Gertrude's brain! Suddenly, she knew what they would do!

They ate candied molasses with corn mash, danced the chicken dance, and everything went wonderful at the OGL Ranch awesome Chick-a-doodle-doo- night.
