One day Gertrude McCluck decided to go to the fair. Hettie the Hen was sitting next to her on the roost.
"Hey, Hettie, I get to go to the fairy today," said Gertrude.
"Well, hatch my eggs, Gertie...I'm going too!" Gertrude tried to hide her disappointment, for she had wanted to go on this adventure alone. She quietly walked away. She went outside and ate some bugs, kicked up some dirt, and pecked some grass. You know, typical chicken stuff.
At six o'clock p.m., Gertrude headed to the fair, searching for an adventure. When she arrived, a large pig walked over to her.
"Why are you here?" he asked.
"I'm here for an adventure," Gertrude answered.
The pig just sat down and laughed, "It's pretty boring around here, but it's nice to meet you. I'm Franny, I love picking up all the food people drop," said the pig.
Gertrude decided to check out the poultry barn. Gertrude noticed her cousin, Ernie, whom she hadn't seen in years. And he had a blue ribbon around his neck! "Hi Gertie, it's so nice to see you again. Did you hear I won best of show?"
"Cool, Ernie," said Gertrude. After the two cousins hugged, Gertrude went on her way. She sat down to see a horse show. But right when the show began, she felt the urge to try some cotton candy. She returned just in time to hear the ringmaster ask for a volunteer from the audience.
She dropped her cotton candy and raised her left wing and was chosen. The ringmaster placed her on a beautiful black horse. As Gertrude grabbed the reins, the horse took off. As the horse ran around in circles, Gertrude clucked, "For the love of feathers, what have I gotten myself into?"
The horse finally came to a sudden stop, throwing Gertrude in the air. Hettie the Hen happened to be looking up at that very moment and yelled, "That looks like Gertrude!"
Gertrude landed safely in someone's cotton candy (which reminded her that she had never finished hers). She found it lying in the grass where she left it, covered with ants. "Bonus!" said Gertrude. She looked around at the busyness of the fair and decided to head for home.
Just as she got settled in her roost, her friends asked her, "Where have you been all evening?"
Gertrude looked at the small piece of cotton candy still stuck in her wing and smiled.
"Oh nowhere special." She drifted off to sleep with a happy heart and full belly.
