Gertrude McCluck's Frightening Walk

By Sarah Fox
North Carolina

Gertrude McCluck and Gabby went for a nice walk in the evening. Along the way, they found huge footprints. "What's this?" Gabby exclaimed.

"Why don't we follow them?" Gertrude answered. They decided to follow these mysterious shapes, but they did not know how far they went. When they came about a mile from the starting of the footprints, they felt very tired and they laid down to sleep.

It was morning when they woke up. They decided to follow the footprints some more. Gabby whined, "I'm hungry. Isn't there any food around here?" Gertrude looked around, but she couldn't find any food, so they decided to go off hunting for food. They marked their place and tried to make very deep footprints. They finally found some huge berries. "What's this?" Gabby exclaimed.

"Why don't we eat them?" Gertrude answered. They gathered a basket of berries and went back on their way.

By now, it was late in the afternoon. They came back to the footprints and walked along them some more. Gabby tried to distinguish what animal this was, but she couldn't, so they decided to go on and figure out themselves. Finally, they came to the end of the footprints. They found a huge cave. "What's this?" Gabby exclaimed.

"Why don't we look inside?" Gertrude answered. So they decided to go in.

Finally, they saw a huge creature. "Is it a giant?" Gabby whispered. Then Gabby slowly tiptoed up to it and he gently felt it. It felt scratchy and fuzzy at the same time.

"Is it a cat?" Gabby whispered. Then suddenly the huge creature jumped up and growled a fierce growl.

"It's a bear!" Gabby cried. Immediately they rushed out of the cave. They ran as fast as possible, but they heard huge, loud crashes behind them.

"He's chasing us!" Gertrude cried. Finally they came back to the place where they found their berries. They ran even longer and came to the place where they found the footprints. But the bear was still chasing them.

They ran all the way home and shut the door and locked it. They didn't know what to do and they hoped the bear would not find them.

Then they saw the bear. He was running as fast as he could, but he couldn't stop. He had to swerve and he swerved straight into a tree. At this sight, they laughed and laughed. The bear was dead.
