Gertrude The Chicken

By Sarah Trupiano
Michigan

There once was a chicken named Bonnie, and she laid one egg one day. She was very happy, so she went off to tell the rooster and her friends. They gathered around the egg, and they clucked to one another about how fluffy the chick would be. Bonnie couldn't wait 'till it hatched. Days and days she checked on the egg but it didn't hatch.

Until one day when she came to check, instead of an egg, she found a chick sitting in a broken eggshell! Bonnie gathered all her poultry friends and while they gathered, the chick kept on asking chickens if they were her mother! Bonnie decided to call her Gertrude McCluck. That made her happy.
