Gertrude McCluck
and the Magic Muffin

By Tyler Johnson
Wisconsin

Gertrude was getting ready to visit Henny and Penny, the Clucky sisters. On Gertrude's way, she saw a magic muffin and picked it up. The muffin turned into popcorn, and she gobbled the popcorn, but then the wrapper blasted into a shiny gold trophy. Startled, Gertrude put the trophy into her spy bag, and ran flapping her wings and calling out, "I got a trophy!" all the way to Henny and Penny's house.

Henny and Penny, the efficient chicken feed growers, showed Gertrude their trophies. They told the story of how they got their bright shiny trophies. Henny and Penny were walking to their friend Frogger the Ram's house when they stumbled across two magic muffins that burst into colored popcorn. They gobbled the popcorn, then the wrappers launched into trophies. After they were done telling their story, Gertrude looked at her watch and said she had to visit Phoenixalena. She almost stumbled over Skittles talking to a frog. By the time Gertrude arrived at Phoenixalena's house, Phoenixalena had a trophy too.

Gertrude and Phoenixalena sat down to have coffee and discussed the wonderful trophies that everyone was getting. They decided to solve the mystery of the trophies and grabbed their spy gear and ran as fast as they could out the door. They met their friend, Mr. Polish, by the dust bath. He had a trophy too. They continued on until they saw cat tracks. They got their nets ready to protect themselves from danger. Next they saw a cat with a box labeled "Magic Muffin Cat." They ran after him and finally caught him and took him to Mr. Silkie, the police chicken. Mr. Silkie asked the cat, "What are you doing with that box of magic muffins?"

The cat explained," I am giving out magic muffins that turn into trophies to make all the chickens happy."

Mr. Silkie, the police chicken, freed the cat from Gertrude's net. The cat ran over to Gertrude and Pheonixalena and shook their wings and then disappeared into the bushes. All the happy chickens met at 7 o'clock for dried mealworm salad and cricket stew at Pheonixalena's house. Gertrude brought a present of pork chops for the magic muffin cat, their special guest.
