Gertrude McCluck: Chicken in Charge
Gertrude Cookie Craft

Gertrude Cookie Craft

Supplies:

Round wafer cookies (Vanilla Wafers)
Golden sandwich cookies (Oreos)
Fruit chews (Starburst)
Fruit slice jelly candy
Black gel frosting in a tube
Peanut butter or canned frosting
Food scissors
Knife

Directions:

1. Spread thin layer of peanut butter or frosting (a.k.a. "glue") on two sandwich cookies and press together.

2. Unwrap a yellow fruit chew and warm in the microwave for a few seconds. Flatten the candy to about the thickness of a coin, then using a scissors or knife, cut out two legs. Use the scraps to form a beak.

3. Spread "glue" on the upper flat part of each leg and stick to the bottom of the two sandwich cookies.

4. Cut fruit slice candy in half lengthwise (two tails can be made from one piece of candy). Cut out two small triangle pieces from one end to resemble feathers. (See photo inset below)

5. Put a dab of "glue" on the un-cut end of the tail feathers and lightly press onto the top back of the sandwich cookies (opposite the feet).

6. Spread "glue" on two round wafer cookies and lightly press together, making a creamy filling between them.

7. Unwrap a red fruit chew and warm in the microwave for a few seconds. Flatten the candy to about the thickness of a coin, then using a scissors or knife, cut out a comb shape. Dab a bit of "glue" on the bottom of the comb and press into cream between wafer cookies. Use remaining red fruit chew to form a wattle and adhere in the same manner.

8. Put a dab of "glue" on the beak piece and slide into place. Your Buff Orpington chicken is now ready for viewing or eating! Experiment with other cookie types to make other breeds.
